You can afford an editor; in the long run you will come out ahead.
Here’s what I do:
I specialize in editing PhD dissertations and other writing requirements for students enrolled in on-line universities.
Students participating in distance education almost always are professionals with full-time employment. As such, there are time constraints and deadlines. My fast turnaround time, coupled with my knowledge of what it takes to get your manuscript approved, will help you maintain your busy schedule.
I edit for sentence structure, word choice, grammar, and readability. I rewrite sentences and paragraphs that are awkward, vague, or unclear. And, I will ensure the manuscript is in compliance with APA and your university’s format.
Most students submit their manuscripts by priority mail or as an e-mail attachment. I then do the editing on hard copy and return it by priority or express mail.

And finally, some sage advice from Will Strunk:
“Vigorous writing is concise. A
sentence should contain no unnecessary words, a paragraph no unnecessary
sentences, for the same reasons that a drawing should have no unnecessary lines
and a machine no unnecessary parts.”
